Parenting Paper Requirements:
• By 11:59pm on the due date, every student will be required to turn in via Blackboard a reference page, and a 3 page paper.
• Each assignment must be typed 3 pages in length and in 12 pt font, 2 line space, and 1 inch margins.
• Internet/ computer search should be conducted to find one article from a peer-reviewed scientific journal that should be used to help you expand on the information you present in your paper. Depending on what parenting style(s), the people that raised you used, you can find a journal article that documents research conducted on that type of parenting and its effectiveness, consequences on children, positive effects, negative effects, etc. You should incorporate the additional information as a way to explore the topic in further depth. You are welcome to use more than one reference but you are only required to have one. All references must be listed in APA format for both in-text citations and in a reference page that should be included with your paper.
• All students should write their own paper (not a group effort).
• Late papers will be deducted 5 points for the first day late and then 10 points will be deducted for each additional day late. No papers will be accepted after one week from its original due date.
• The bulk of your paper should be reflecting on your childhood years and the parenting styles used by your parents/ people that raised you (does not have to be your biological parents). Students will need to address questions including:
o Based on Baumrind’s parenting styles described in your textbook, what parenting style(s) best describes the methods your parents used to raise you?
o How has their parenting affected the person you have become?
o Discuss how their parenting has affected your development on the biological, cognitive, and socioemotional levels. For example:
▪ Biological influences would include factors such as nutrition and physical activity that may affect your growth and the diet and exercise habits you’ve acquired.
▪ Cognitive influences would include factors on how to process information (for example, how did they model problem solving and teach you how to solve problems?) and their focus on teaching/ emphasis on learning and education that could influence your intelligence, reasoning, and language development.
▪ Socioemotional influences would include factors such as how to process your feelings especially dealing with unpleasant emotions such as sadness, anger, stress, and anxiety. What coping strategies did they model and what coping strategies did they teach you (if any)? Also, what did they teach you about the value of family and friends and having a support network based on what they modeled? Did they encourage your friendships or try to restrict them or did it depend? Were there any cultural and/ or religious factors? Did you learn your moral values through watching them? Through their teachings? Both? or Did you have to develop your moral values on your own (i.e., learned what not to do from them)?
o How do you think it will affect (or has affected) how you discipline and raise your own children?
• Prior to turning in your paper, please review it to ensure you have used correct spelling and grammar and that your writing reflects college level writing skills.
• AI: should not be used at all. Your papers will be checked for AI use, and papers above 15% will not pass.
• Similarity Index (SI%) will be checked via turnitin and should not be above 25%. Papers above this % will not pass or will need to be rewritten. Be sure to quote or paraphrase your References in APA format to prevent plagiarism.
