Read Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography (Norton Critical Editions, Edited by Joyce E. Chaplin) part two (pages 69-89) and part three from page 103 to 121. In part three start from the paragraph that begins “My business was now continually augmenting…” on page 103 to the end of the paragraph that ends “some of our Towns in America” on page 121. Answer the following questions about it in your discussion board post. Remember to include quotes with page numbers from the edition I’ve ordered for this class:
- What, specifically, is Franklin’s “bold and arduous” project for arriving at moral perfection? Describe his project. How does it reflect Enlightenment values? What do you think of this plan? What seems useful? What doesn’t? To what extent do you attempt something similar in your own life?
- I’ve chosen a short selection from part three of the Autobiography. In part three he focuses on describing the events of his life from 1736 to 1762. What kinds of events and endeavors does it showcase? Why does he choose to emphasize these things as opposed to other aspects of his life? Perhaps also tie this to the Enlightenment lecture
