Beyond the Divide: A Deep Dive into Gender Discrepancies in Educational Attainment

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

A one-page proposal (double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font, one inch margins) with a cover page and References page (7th edition APA style), so three pages in total. Name, student number, course code plus section number, Prof’s name and an assignment title indicating your topic choice are required on the cover page. No running headers please. No annotations required on the References page

I HAVE ATTACHED THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY TO THIS ORDER. PLEASE REFER TO THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY BEFORE STARTING THE THESIS. THIS IS FOR A CANADIAN UNIVERSITY SOCIOLOGY CLASS, PLEASE USE APPROPRIATE GRAMMAR.

Having already chosen your topic and begun your research (see Annotated Bibliography instructions), it is now time to take a clear and specific position on your topic and outline your plan of argument. This is a proposal for your Thesis Essay, in which you will be expected to consider an issue, debate, controversy, or problem associated with the study of gender and/or gender inequality, take a position on your topic, and argue your point of view using evidence from course readings and researched sources, all of which will be properly referenced in 7th edition APA style. Please remember that this is not a psychology course. No effects-based psychology research topics are allowed
Your proposal should include an introduction to your topic and set up of your thesis, a thesis statement, and a brief outline of how you will structure your essay and argue your point of view. It must be written in paragraph form and complete sentences and must not exceed one page (not including the cover page and References page).
Your intro, thesis, and plan should employ and be rooted in the sources compiled in your Annotated Bibliography (which will be re-listed on your References Page here) and be designed to analyze your topic sociologically. The References page for this assignment must include all the sources you plan to use for your final paper, and it must include at least the same number and types of required sources from the Annotated Bibliography. If some sources have changed between assignments, that is fine, just so long as your new sources are still relevant and appropriate and you still have at least the minimum number and types of required sources. You must cite your sources in your proposal using APA style in-text citations but no direct quotes. No subheadings for this assignment either. You will want to use subheadings for your final paper, and quotes will also be allowed for the final paper, but NOT here. This is a one page assignment. You do not have the space for quotes and subheadings here. If analyzing one or more media products, do not forget to also reference it or them in APA style.
Do not begin your proposal with your thesis statement. You have to introduce your topic and set up your thesis first, which should include the citing of sources. Once you have done that, please begin your one-sentence thesis statement with the phrase: “In this essay, I will argue that…” Do not alter the phrasing required for the beginning of your thesis statement. Please especially do not “argue how”. It does not make any grammatical sense to “argue how”. You cannot “argue how”. Do not remove the word “argue” from your thesis statement. You thesis statement must be an argument. A thesis does not “explore” or “describe” or even “analyze” in and of itself (your Thesis Essay will provide an analysis that demonstrates your thesis, but your thesis itself, as a one sentence argument, does not “analyze”). A thesis argues. Period. Full stop. Please do not forget that. Avoid overly prescriptive thesis statements. Bury any “shoulds,” “musts,” or “needs to” prescriptions in an analytic argument that addresses consequences. Do not italicize or bold your 9 thesis or put it in quotes. If your thesis is phrased correctly, it does not need to be italicized or bolded or put in quotes. Do not end your proposal with your thesis statement. You have to provide a plan of argument after your thesis, i.e. an outline of the sub-arguments you will use to demonstrate your thesis. As noted above, your References page should include the sources from your Bibliography (or any new or replacement sources) but no annotations are required. Take note: students do not need to format the entire assignment using APA style; APA style is only required for references and in- text citations, NOT for general formatting.
Worth 10% of final grade and graded using the following criteria:
1. Introduction of topic and quality of set-up for your thesis statement (2/10)
2. Quality and clarity of working thesis (3/10)
3. Quality of plan of argument (3/10)
4. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation (1/10)
5. Following assignment and formatting instructions, including APA style (1/10)
