Students will focus on contemporary Black life in the world today. What are some key issues affecting Black people in America or the Diaspora today? How are they responding? What local or state efforts are being made in support of or against them? Does your chosen current issue share any similarities/differences to challenges we have discussed in class (e.g., enslavement, segregation, colonialism, incarceration)? Your presentation should demonstrate a clear understanding of the issue and how it relates to the themes we discussed in class.
Minimum Requirements:
- A presentation consisting of about 6 minutes of information.
- Name(s) of student(s), title of work, and Works Cited page/slide.
- Clearly demonstrate the key issue, who it effects, and how it relates to the themes we’ve discussed in class.
- The following themes are enslavement, segregation, capitalism, colonialism, education, politics and history.
- Keep in mind, specify your issue as much as you can. In other words, how Black Bostonians deal with policing is very different from how Black people in Ferguson, Missouri deal with police. Another example is how different the effects of capitalism are to Black people in Boston as opposed to capitalism in Haiti, Ghana, or South Africa. BE SPECIFIC.
- Refer to at least one of the readings in our course material. How does the reading relate to your chosen topic?
- Respond as best you can to a Q&A following your presentation.
