You will write a brief formal business proposal that uses professional conventions in writing, structure, and presentation as covered in this course. The scenario and details upon which to base this assignment are provided to you in the Ametros simulation. In addition, read all the additional instructions and requirements provided here. Refer to the educational material provided in Ametros on proposal writing as well as the readings “Effective Document Design” and “Persuasive Communications,” both available on the Learning Materials page. Pay careful attention when reading the material on how to write an executive summary and the use of persuasive techniques.
This assignment is worth 15% of your final mark.
Assignment Deadlines
All course work must be submitted before 11:59 p.m. (Mountain Time) on the final day of your contract. Assignments may take eight business days from submission to be graded and returned.
Assignment Instructions
You will write a brief formal proposal document that is based on the scenario provided to you in the Ametros platform regarding the lack of gender diversity and inclusion in Monarchy Technology’s development team. In your proposal you must describe at least one of your ideas to address the hiring of more women and/or creating a more inclusive environment for female employees.
This issue of gender diversity and inclusion is complex, so no one idea, or even several, will completely solve this problem. However, your proposal should offer an idea or two to make a meaningful contribution to begin to address the specific situation at Monarchy Technology. Consider both sides but find ways to persuade your audience that your proposed solution is the best for this situation.
External research is not required. Use any quotations sparingly as the bulk of your work should be in your own words.
Assignment Structure
Your report must include (in the following order):
- Title page: Include a descriptive, unique title and your name and job title.
- Executive Summary: Use 3–5 sentences to present a high-level, action-oriented summary of the problem.
- Introduction: Briefly provide background information on the problem (see Marie’s email in the Ametros’ platform). This should be no more than 2–3 paragraphs of 3–4 sentences each.
- Proposed Solution: This should comprise the bulk of your work. Begin by clearly stating your proposed solution in 1–2 sentences. Then, in several paragraphs, provide details on your idea and its plan for implementation. Discuss the benefits prominently. Organize your ideas into sections with applicable subheadings.
- Ethics: In one paragraph of 2–3 sentences, anticipate any human or environmental impacts your proposed solution will create within the company, for Monarchy’s clients or partners, or society at large during implementation and afterwards once successfully implemented.
- Conclusion: In one paragraph of no more than 2–4 sentences, conclude your proposal on a positive note by restating how your proposed solution has direct and indirect benefits for Monarchy.
- References (optional): Only include this section if you used any sources of ideas, words, or images. If so, list them here in correct APA style.
Use the words in bold above as section headings in your document. You can have additional subheadings if appropriate.
As ADMN 233 is a writing course, you will be primarily graded on your writing skills (see grading criteria below) and not the originality or quality of your proposed solution.
Personal Reflection Section
After your report, include a section with the heading “Personal Reflection.” In 4–6 sentences, write a personal reflection on your professional experience with proposals, formal or informal, and what you have learned from writing these that you have applied to this proposal. (If you do not have professional experience with proposals, you may include your prior experience with proposals personally or in other courses or educational settings). Also discuss what you have learned from the course material on proposal writing that you can apply to your profession or future career.
Required Length
Your assignment should be between 800 and 1100 words. The word count does not include the title page or references, but it does include the personal reflection section.
Presentation and Formatting
In professional communications, the appearance of documents is almost as important as their content. For this assignment, you are required to use a professional looking template based either from those provided by Microsoft Word or Google Docs or by creating your own template design. Use techniques covered in this course to present your writing effectively (e.g., bolding, headings, whitespace, bulleted lists, colour, page numbers, etc.).
Use the following formatting specifications for your assignment document:
- page size of “letter”
- 1.5 line spacing
- margins of 2.5 cm (1 inch) on all sides
- standard font (e.g., Arial, Times or similar)
- font size of 10–12
- left alignment of text
Writing Quality
The main purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate their professional writing skills and knowledge of the style and conventions of business proposals. Nonetheless, your proposed solution must make sense within the context of the given scenario at Monarchy Technology and represent a plausible idea. External research is not required, but if you do use the ideas, words, or images of anyone else then be sure to cite them using APA style.
Be sure your points flow logically, clearly, and in a well-organized fashion (main points and subtopics should be immediately apparent). Professional writing techniques, such as clarity and brevity, are crucial. Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and paragraphing are also essential.
All words must be completely your own. You may NOT use the wording from these assignment instructions, the Ametros platform, or any other source without properly quoting and citing your source. Review tips on avoiding plagiarism and how to paraphrase properly on the Write Site.
