Busting Out of the Frame–Compare and Contrast Two Artworks That Break from Tradition

Assignment Introduction and Instructions:

In this unit we’ve been learning about how art no longer is something that is put into a picture frame and displayed in a museum or gallery setting. We’re now seeing an increase in art in the form of performances, installations you can walk through/around, and total environments you can see.

This assignment will test your understanding of artists wishing to move beyond traditional art methods of communication and display, and what impact the artist, the media used, and the art historical style had on the final result.

Written Assignment:

You are to write an essay comparing and contrasting these two works of art that have moved beyond the canvas, accounting for both their similarities and differences. These works must be chosen from our current unit, Unit 3.

  1. Identify the two works of art from two different artists that represent the kind of art that “busts out of the box” (that is, if it has four corners like a painting, or can be displayed in a pedestal or hung on a wall, you’re not on the right track–check in with me if unsure). Include all that is expected in an art historical essay (artists, titles, dates, styles, media, styles, and subject).
  2. You must analyze why these works of art are examples of their respective artists and art movements/styles, and how each describes and accomplished their goal(s)–or would you argue that they did not?
  3. This is a compare and contrast essay so share how they’re alike and different from one another.
  4. Your essay should be a minimum of 500 words, essay format and proofread; typed double-spaced, in a 12-point font.

Submission Instructions:

  1. Save your document, using your own name, as Lastname Firstname
  2. Submit your essay as a pdf or link using the Assignment Submission Button on this page.
