What is a case study? A case study is a detailed examination of a specific individual or group and their experiences, behaviors, and beliefs related to a particular topic or issue. The goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate a rich and nuanced understanding of the complex social and cultural factors that shape mental health and the experiences of individuals and groups struggling with mental health challenges.
Directions: Choose one case study to examine the mental health challenges faced by a particular individual or group. Your job is to think beyond individual behaviors, genetics, or health conditions and instead research the social, cultural, and environmental factors that create and exacerbate specific mental health challenges that are unique to this particular group.
Case Study #1: High rates of depression and anxiety among Black Americans. Using our course content and at least two peer-reviewed or academic sources, explain and describe the ways in which systemic racism, discrimination, and other social determinants of health contribute to these disparities in mental health outcomes for this specific population in the United States.
After choosing your case study, you are to research and then write an answer to this question:
What are the social, cultural, and environmental factors that create and exacerbate specific mental health challenges that are unique to this particular group?
Your analysis needs to be at least three pages and is obvious you took the time necessary to think deeply about these connections.
