Assignment 3: Policy Topic Presentation (Individual)

You will present to your colleagues in class a 10-15 minute presentation details about the policy topic/area you have previously chosen. The goals of this assignment are as follows: outlining key stakeholders and communities in the policy space; how problems are being defined; types of instruments most often chosen to address the problems; and analyzing gaps in policy approaches in the area.

Your presentation must have the following components:

Part 1: Discuss contextual background to the policy topic. Is this a new area for public policy? How did it get on the agenda? What stakeholders and communities are involved?

Part 2: Outline the way in which policy problems have been defined. What approach has been taken to address those problems? Is there a common instrument chosen? If so, why would that be?

Part 3: Analyze how the policy topic has been addressed. Are the stakeholders and communities as inclusive as they should be? Could you recommend other ways of defining the public policy problems? If there is a common or “go-to” instrument choice, is it effective in the policy space? Why or why not? From an intersectional perspective, can we say that the policy area is effective?

The presentation should be 10-15 minutes in length and you should be prepared to answer questions following your presentation. You may use power point to supplement your presentation but are not required to.
