Chinese Immigration to America – Research Proposal
Background
In the 19th century, a large number of Chinese citizens immigrated to the United States, especially to the West Coast. This wave of immigration was driven by factors like the gold rush in California, as well as poor economic conditions in China at the time. However, the growing Chinese population soon faced intense racism and discrimination from white Americans.
Research Questions
What were the main push and pull factors that drove Chinese immigration to the U.S. in the 19th century? Economic hardship in China and opportunities from the Gold Rush seem to be key motivations, but I want to explore this question in more depth.
Did the motivations and backgrounds of Chinese immigrants change over time during this period?
What forms of discrimination and racism did Chinese immigrants face once in America? How did the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 epitomize the anti-Chinese attitudes?
Hypothesis
I hypothesize that Chinese immigrants were pulled to America mainly by economic opportunities like the California Gold Rush, but faced intense racism and discrimination as their population grew. This racism culminated in the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, which drastically reduced Chinese immigration (Coolidge, 1909). I expect to find clear evidence of these motivations and experiences by analyzing historical records of Chinese immigration patterns, as well as accounts of anti-Chinese attitudes and actions.
Research Approach
To test my hypothesis and answer the research questions, I will rely on both quantitative immigration data and qualitative accounts from Chinese immigrants themselves. This evidence will come from historical records in national archives, state records in California, historical academic literature, and databases of periodicals and newspapers (Coolidge, 1909). By triangulating multiple lines of evidence, I hope to understand the Chinese experience in 19th century America.
