choose a section of the supplemental reading where the authors describe results that show differences between Western and non-Western participants and write a short paper (2-3 pages) that answers the questions below in detail.

Your assignment is to choose a section of the supplemental reading where the authors describe results that show differences between Western and non-Western participants and write a short paper (2-3 pages) that answers the questions below in detail.

  1. Choose a topic of research from the article in which Western or American samples differ from samples from other cultures (for example, fairness and cooperation in economic decisions or personal choice). Give a brief summary of the topic.
  2. Explain how the researchers tested this topic.  What were the methods or experimental task they used?
  3. Explain the basic results for Western or American samples, and the results for at least one comparative sample in the article.
  4. Discuss some possible explanations for these differences.  Please spend some time and detail on this section.  Review what the authors say in the supplemental reading, but also pull from things discussed in your text-book and lecture related to culture.

Criteria for Success

To successfully complete this assignment you will

  • Respond to each section of the assignment, summarizing in your own words (not copied directly from the article).
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the reading and class material in your response.
  • Pay careful attention to #4 and use this as an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about culture from the reading, your text book, and the lecture.
  • Write your response in a paragraph format and cite your sources in-text and in a reference page using APA-format.
    • Make sure that you choose a topic where Western and non-Western participants differ in their results.
    • Make sure you’re focusing on a specific finding in the article, not summarizing the entire article.
      • The goal of the assignment is to explore class material, so submissions that are unrelated to our class material will not fulfill the assignment.
  • These are some learning objectives we have been looking at:
    1. Define social cognition
    2. Compare and contrast cognitive and experiential systems of decision-making
    3. Explore humans as “cognitive misers”
    4. Discuss how we make attributions about others’ behavior
    5. Describe the Fundamental Attribution Error and some reasons why we commit this error
    6. Explore how the Actor/observer effect relates to the fundamental attribution error

    These are the professor’s observations:
This paper summarizes the entire article rather than going through a specific research topic in detail and responding to the four questions posed in the assignment instructions.
