Assignment Instructions
Background
For this report you will provide an explanation for the evolution of an Australian landform of your choice (see first assignment). This could be a series of coastal dunes, a lagoon or wetland, a river reach, a mountain range, hillslope or floodplain.
You will expected to visit your site to undertake mapping and undertake observations to aid in your interpretation of the landscape’s evolution. You will need to submit your assignment as a report of approximately 2000 word not including references, figures and tables.
Tasks
Choose an Australian landform and provide an explanation of its evolution; noting the dominant endogenic and exogenic processes resulting in its evolution.
It is up to you to choose your own landform to study. You will check with the teaching staff as to the appropriateness of the landform you wish to study and this must be done by the end of the third week of trimester (see Research Report Part A: Site Selection).
It is expected that you will visit your site to undertake a basic mapping exercise.
This will involve the construction of a series of scaled maps that illustrates the:
- general geomorphological setting (including the basic dimensions and key geomorphological components of the field area);
- cross sections or long profiles (which can be undertaken with the aid of a basic GPS) of the field area. These profiles should capture the main geomorphological components or topographic highs and lows of the study area; and,
- a basic description of the geology, soils and vegetation associated with the various geomorphological components that make up your field area.
Detailed instructions for conducting your research and preparing your report are provided in the tutorials on choosing your field site, what to look for in the field and preparing your report.
