choose one of the three fairy tales (Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty) we read for class and write a modified essay.

For this assignment, you will choose one of the three fairy tales (Little Red Riding Hood,

Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty) we read for class and write a modified essay.

Prompt: Choose any adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, or Cinderella, and persuade your audience that this version is the best. You’ll first need to define “best” and then use one of the earliest recorded versions (most likely Perrault) as your “original” point of reference, meaning that this “original” version will be what you use to make claims about the traditional elements of the story.

Questions to consider:
What does your chosen version reveal about perceptions of society at the time of its release date? What values, fears, anxieties, and hopes can you extract from the revisions and consistencies of this adaptation?

Here’s how you will want to structure it:

  1. Intro (this is only your thesis, nothing more, nothing less.)

  2. Body paragraphs (repeat the following format for each body paragraph you use.)

    a. Mini argument/example b. Evidentiary support
    c. Analysis
    d. Transition

  3. Conclusion (Open up the conversation with an exploration of larger implications regarding the chosen fairy tale and your argument. This section can include questions–just don’t repeat the same questions you should be answering from the prompt.)

Missing a grading meeting will result in a 5% penalty on your grade for this assignment.

As with any and all assignments in this course, students’ grades are based on citation, grammar/syntax, clarity, argument, concision, and voice. While all students must turn in their assignments on time, earlier submissions are acceptable. These earlier submissions (1-2

weekdays before the deadline) will receive provisional grades that students can either accept as their final grade for the assignment, or they may use them as guides for a re-write.
