Short Answer: This portion is worth 20 points total. You can see a break down on the rubric below. There is no time limit to this part so take your time and be thorough. The instructions are below and you should read them carefully all the way through before you begin.
- This short answer portion of exam 1 must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted as a Word doc, or pdf. as I cannot open .pages files. (See APA Help page for font requirements).
- You must answer the questions in their entirety to receive full points and each answer should be 2 complete paragraphs – approximately 200 words – no bullet points, full sentences, correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization is expected. As a reminder, the first line of all paragraphs should be indented (1 tab).
- Each answer must include a reference from your textbook, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, with proper APA in-text citation, and a reference page that includes a citation for your textbook. APA Help
- For any question that asks you to give an example, you should give one from your own observations and life experience, not the ones listed in the book.
- Definitions and explanations of terms and concepts should come from the book either as quotes or paraphrases.
- Choose TWO of the five questions below to answer. Be sure to identify which question you are answering. (ei: put what number it is or copy and paste the question before your response.)

- Using any (one) concept from chapter 1 in our textbook, identify a mediated example that illustrates the concept. Mediated (media) examples are images, video clips, memes, gifs, social media posts (screenshots) etc. You can use Google images, your social media accounts, giffy, YouTube, etc. to find your example. Provide a link or insert the example. Then debrief the example. AKA Explain the image in general. Define the concept. Explain how the example illustrates the concept. Discuss how the concept can be applied to your life and how the example relates to and/or impacts you.
- What cultural identity do you identify with? What are some of the shared rituals (or language or collective memory, etc.) that are regularly practiced and have special significance in your culture? How does this cultural identity affect your understanding and performance of self-concept?
- Think about a conversation (communication episode) you have participated in recently. Identify and define/describe the five stages of listening using this conversation as an example. Give an example of a problem that you encountered at one of the stages and provide a solution for overcoming it.
- Inclusive language allows a speaker to connect with his/her listeners. Define/explain the three different types of biased language and give an example of each type. Then, take those examples and explain how to make them unbiased. Explain why we should not use biased language and describe the effects of biased language on communication.
- Throughout Chapter 6, culture has been a major fact in determining the correct interpretation of nonverbal behaviors. Define proxemics and describe an example that illustrates distinct cultural differences in proxemics. Define emblems and describe an example that illustrates distinct cultural differences in emblems. How will you accurately interpret these nonverbal behaviors?
