Two essays requiring library research will be assigned in class. Students will generally have about 2 weeks to prepare an essay based on a written prompt. Essays are 1000 words minimum, typed, single-spaced, 12 point font, and must reference all relevant materials from class (lectures, guest discussions, films, and readings) in a formal bibliography, contain a thesis statement and main argument, and may include personal opinion where appropriate. More information will be given 2 weeks prior to each due date and no late essays will be accepted.
PROMPT: Explain the colonial and economic basis for California Native American terminal narratives and extinction myths. Include historical colonial incursions that are largely distinct to the state of California and, importantly, how these extinction myths are experienced by Native Californians to this day. Exceptional essays will also draw attention to what Native California groups are doing to combat these narratives. Draw from course reading assignments, student facilitation projects, and individual research where needed to support your work. 1000 word minimum.
