As an adult educator or trainer, you may be writing communication that is brief or long, formal or informal, presented via social media, or created for a training module or course. Knowing how to write these and many other types of communications is key to maintaining productive working relationships with colleagues, clients, students, and learners. In this assignment, you will practice writing common types of professional communications to be presented through various channels.
Scenario: Imagine that you are applying for the job of Learning and Development Trainer at an organization or company that’s part of an industry that is familiar to you. The hiring department has requested that you provide work samples that demonstrate your professional message-writing skills to communicate various kinds of information. In addition, they request that professional messages be written for specific communication channels to demonstrate a broad range of skills and abilities.
Create a professional message portfolio to be included with your job application that provides message examples for the following categories:
- Digital media messages
- Professional emails
- Routine messages
Include the following information and items in your portfolio:
- Identify and describe the type of industry and the organization or company for the job that you are seeking.
- Write a brief 75- to 150-word internal digital media message for a messaging platform such as Microsoft Teams or Slack in which you announce a new and exciting learning and development opportunity for employees (e.g., a new skill assessment or training for a new technology or software).
- Write a brief 75- to 150-word external blog post for the organization or company’s website in which you describe the positive work environment, company culture, and other perks offered to potential employees.
- Write a minimum 225-word internal email in which you use the indirect approach to communicate negative or sensitive news to employees (e.g., gym closing or loss of free parking).
- Write a minimum 225-word external email in which you use the direct approach to invite a well-known industry leader to be a guest speaker at an important event for the organization or company.
- Select a simple technology-based task that you do every day (e.g., opening emails, copying and pasting, or creating a new folder),, and in a minimum of 175 words write step-by-step instructions for an individual that has limited technology experience to complete the simple task.
