You will need an introduction that, perhaps, discusses what it means to “come of age.” Then, it should tell of the difficulties young men in the South faced after the Civil War when they had to come of age. The introduction should mention the two authors (but no biography) and the titles as well. A clearly defined thesis will be one that includes what the purpose of the paper is!
At least one paragraph should be devoted to Faulkner’s “Barn Burning.” In it, you should tell about Sarty Snopes and how he comes of age. What forces him to grow up so fast? How does he handle it?
Next, do the same thing for Dave in Wright’s “Almos’ a Man.”
Another paragraph should talk about how their situations are similar.
An additional paragraph should discuss how their situations are different, and it may help to focus specifically on their differences due to their races. This should probably be the longest paragraph.
One other paragraph needs to make a prediction of what will become of Sarty and Dave when the stories are over. What do you think will become of them? DO NOT USE “I” or “YOU” to answer these questions!
You also need a conclusion in which you discuss how exploring “coming of age” in this story helps the reader better understand the work.
You will need to do a Works Cited page for the assignment. You must have THREE SOURCES. You can use the films as two of your sources. In addition to that, you must find two more sources to support your work, but I have provided you with some approved sources as links at the bottom of the page. If you do not use the two I recommended, you must use a professional/reliable resource (no .com resources or information from Wikipedia).
You must use standard MLA format for this writing assignment, and you MUST have a Works Cited page (which will be page 4 or 5). MLA format means using Times New Roman size 12 font, double space only (no extra spacing of lines or blank spaces), you must include the proper MLA heading, and you must use the correct name and page number in the top right-hand corner. NO CONTRACTIONS, SLANG, OR TEXT-TALK! When you write about a story, it should be in present tense. You must also include a title that should be centered.
