Organizational Leadership Paper:

Background:

Due to significant losses over the past six quarters, the Board of Directors of what had been a rapidly growing multinational technology firm took the unusual step of firing the entire leadership team (CEO, COO, CFO and CTO). Currently the firm, which has operations and local employees on all continents except Antarctica, is being run by the Chairman of the Board and a group of retirees hired on a temporary basis. The Board recently completed interviews for the four senior leadership positions and is ready to make offers next week.

Recognizing the need for fresh young talent, the Board has decided to hire some “superstars” in national firms who range in age from their late 20s to early 30s. As none of these individuals has worked in an international multicultural organization before, the Board has decided to keep the interim leadership in place for another 90 days and put the new leaders through an intensive intercultural development program.

You have been hired by the Board to help these new leaders develop intercultural competence. In your discussions with Board members, you have correctly noted that it often takes years of training and experience for such competence to mature. That said, you believe that there are three global leadership competencies that are critical to running a multicultural organization and feel that you can develop these competencies in the new leaders at the proficient (not expert) level over the next 90 days.

Assignment:

Describe in detail the three global leadership competencies you believe to be most important for a leader in an international multicultural organization to possess and why you believe they should take precedence over other competencies. This paper is not about a training plan! Do not write about or describe the training necessary to achieve competence. This paper should be focused on the competencies themselves and why they are important to multicultural leadership in an organization.
