Compare and contrast the Native American policies of the Jefferson and Jackson administrations. Using one reputable news article (see below) to illustrate a similar modern (2010-present) issue related to diversity/equality/inclusion in the United States, what historical lessons can be applied to this issue from our understanding of early 19th-Century Native American policy? In addition to stating what Jefferson/Jackson did, also consider what their intentions were and whether or not their actions line up with their intentions. Use historical perspective and analyze their intentions and actions. Analyzing means examining the events and using your knowledge and critical thinking skills to create an argument. Don’t just report and summarize the events – go a step further and really examine them. What do they tell us? What do they mean in relation to your argument? Be an analyst, not a reporter. “Reputable news article” means an article from an established news source – these are generally limited to the legacy newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post), the Big 3 network news sources (CBS, ABC, NBC – note that I said NBC and not MSNBC), and wire sources (Associated Press, or AP, and Reuters). Short essays must be over three (3) full pages long, but cannot exceed five (5) full pages. You must use size 12 Times New Roman, double spaced, with 1” margins. When using sources to inform your writing, you MUST use proper Chicago footnote citations and include a bibliography |
