Write an essay comparing and contrasting the two, explaining which song’s lyrics are the more poetically creative and effective.

As you analyze the lyrics, use any relevant key terms from your textbook:
- literary devices and figures of speech (metaphor, simile, analogy, metonymy, personification, apostrophe, epithet, allusion, symbol (invented and traditional), repetition
- diction and word order: (imagery, connotation, ambiguity, irony, paradox, syntax)
- sound of poetry: Rhyme (perfect rhyme, end rhyme, internal rhyme, slant rhyme), alliteration, meter, onomatopoeia, consonance, assonance, anaphora, iambic, trochaic, anapestic, dactylic.
Requirements:
- Unify your essay with a thesis (preferably the last sentence of your introduction) that expresses your main point for your essay–that is, your central claim stating which song’s lyrics are more poetically effective and why.
- Include an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphs should be about 5-10 sentences.
- Organize your paragraphs with topic sentences that express your main sub-claims for your paragraphs.
- Incorporate quotes from the lyrics to support your points. Use the sandwich method to introduce, explain, analyze, and weave in these quotes. Analyzing these quotes should help you support your topic sentence and thus your thesis.
- Write about the lyrics in present tense.
- Include a Works Cited page with an MLA entry for each of your song lyrics. Please see your textbook for information about MLA.
- Write 1000-1250 words (not including the Works Cited).
- Please include the lyrics to your songs (these do not count toward your 1000-1250 words)
