Comparing *The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis* by John Trumbull and “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)” from *Hamilton*

Humans have been creating art for a long time and as such art mediums have naturally influenced each other for a long time as well. As we move into studying what is often thought of as more modern art, this project will serve as a stepping stone between classical and modern art. This project will have you comparing and contrasting the subject matter of a classical piece of art and a modern adaptation of that same subject matter. You will need to research the subject matter of the classical piece of art if you are unfamiliar with the names otherwise you will need to create an informed opinion of the subject matter in both the classical and modern piece of art. Using your two opinions you will then write an essay on which piece of art you felt like more successfully shared the subject matter and why. The research paper should be 2,000 words at least. The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis by John Trumbull compared against the song “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)” from Hamilton. The Battle of Yorktown as your subject matter you will need to research the battle to give yourself a general knowledge of what happened and why the battle was significant. You will then develop an informed opinion on the piece by John Trumbull and then compare that to your informed opinion of the Song “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)”, from Hamilton (a link to the video can be found here Links to an external site.). Which art piece depicting events at the Battle of Yorktown did you feel was more successful in sharing the subject matter? Why?
