Step 1: [Brainstorming] Rewatch the two talks again ( TEDxTalks “I’m not your Asian Stereotype and “My Identity is a Superpower”. links ( https://www.ted.com/talks/america_ferrera_my_identity_is_a_superpower_not_an_obstacle?language=en) and (https://youtu.be/_pUtz75lNaw?si=f1gd3cdXmZ_23IFU)
take notes on parts of the talks related to/addressing the topic of identity that you find informative, significant, impactful. TYPE DOWN the quotes you find relevant as you take notes from the talks.
Step 2: [Introduction] Begin your essay with a summary introducing both of the TEDxTalks, with an emphasis on how the talks are connected due to their shared topic on identity. You should try to use the summary templates and the “funnel” approach we’ve practiced previously to ensure your summary is effective, objective, and organized. Your summary should end with a transitional sentence or transitional sentences introducing the talk you will analyze first in the next part of the essay.
Step 3: [Body] Following the introductory summary, you will compose a comparative analysis consisting of two main parts:
- Part 1: Write 2-3 paragraphs analyzing key quotes from the first TEDxTalk (whichever you want to analyze first), with each paragraph focusing on one quote you previous selected in Step 1 and your in-depth analysis of the quote. Make sure you structure your paragraph like this:
- Topic sentence: announces the main perspective of the paragraph, set up the context for the quote to be introduced, implements the “top slice of bread” of a quotation sandwich (refer to course slides on TSIS Chapter 3 Actions
for the quotation sandwich technique). - Selected quote: incorporates your selected quote into your own writing grammatically and smoothly, inserts “the protein of the sandwich”. DON’T FORGET TO PUT SELECTED QUOTES)
- Analysis of the quote: provides your detailed, in-depth, and objective analysis–NOT your opinion/feeling– of the quote to present your interpretation of the quote.
- Concluding sentence(s): states what you’ve achieved in the paragraph in terms of how the analysis helps your reader understand a perspective from the talk on the topic of identity
- Topic sentence: announces the main perspective of the paragraph, set up the context for the quote to be introduced, implements the “top slice of bread” of a quotation sandwich (refer to course slides on TSIS Chapter 3 Actions
- Part 2: Follow the instructions and repeat all the steps in Part 1 with the second TEDxtalk.
Step 4: [Conclusion/Reflection] Compose a concluding paragraph reflecting on what your’ve learned from both of the talks on the topic of identity, in terms of their similar and different perspectives on the topic. This is the paragraph where you can express your voice/opinion/feeling (“I Say”).
