A literacy narrative is a unique style of essay in which information can be written and shared in personal and stylistic ways. A “literacy narrative” is about your experience with reading/writing/learning. Essay 1 allows you to practice the moves of the narrative genre that we have learned in class.

Assignment Details

Compose a literacy narrative based on one event or aspect of your experience with reading/writing/learning. The narrative should meet the requirements of the genre (see “The Narrative Genre” handout and the “Tips for Writing a Literacy Narrative” video) as well as:

1. Go heavy on pathos
Narratives are a kind of popularization genre, which means that they engage emotional or humanistic appeals. Review the handout “Pathos and HIA” and be sure to include plenty of pathos in your essay.
2. Highlight the bigger picture about literacy and/or writing
What is the lesson from your narrative, concerning literacy or writing? Make sure that this is clear.
