Concept Identification, Analysis, Middle Range Theory Development, and Clinical Application

Concept Identification, Analysis, Middle Range Theory Development, and Clinical Application – Turnitin

Introduction: By defining, describing, and analyzing concepts, nurse scholars can develop a better understanding of how events and experiences, important to advanced practice nursing, are related to other concepts. This understanding can be used to develop middle-range theories which can focus nursing assessments and can be tested through research to develop evidence-based interventions.

1.    Watch the film“Breathing Lessons: The Life of Mark O’Brien” as a case study which you can find on the internet.

2.    Make a list of all of the conceptsthat you identify as relevant to the nursing care of Mark.

3.    Select from your list, four concepts that you believe are related and based on a review of the literature provide a conceptual definition of each of the four selected concepts with references. In reviewing the literature, determine how you believe the concepts are related. This will help you identify the propositions which are the relationship of one concept to another in your theory.

4.    Name your middle range theory (Usually named on the Outcome Variable of Interest in which you think the three other variables are related).

5.    Write a statement that identifies the propositions or relationships among the four selected concepts

6.    Draw a conceptual map/diagram that illustrates how the four concepts are related.

7.    Apply knowledge of characteristics of the four concepts in formulating three nursing assessment questions for each of the four selected concepts of your middle-range theory. (Present questions separately for each concept).

8.    Compare your middle range theory with a published theory that may also be of value in guiding advanced practice nursing in the care of Mark O’Brien nursing based on the literature. Is your thinking consistent with another theorist’s theory?  (Provide Reference).

9.    Provide a well-developed explanation of why, as advance practice nurses, you are nurse theorists (Discuss from your own perspective as well as using references).
