Chapter 13
Hobbes seems to follow another author (whom we are not going to read), Machiavelli, in the lowering of the goals of political life. In this chapter, we see that man is apparently equal. But what is man? What does he do? And how does he act?  What is the ground of government?  Why do we have government?  What is mankind like without any government? Consider the answers to these and other questions as you read. Something to think about:  What does Hobbes’s “state of nature” look like?  Be descriptive!

Chapter 14, pp. 79-82
Hobbes continues to speak about natural law and contracts. Once again, Hobbes forces us to raise several questions. Think about how the beginnings influence the lives of those who are in government. Something to think about: What is Liberty to Hobbes?

Chapter 15, pp. 88-89

In this chapter, Hobbes gives us a definition of justice and injustice.  Or, rather, he poses where we receive our understanding of these concepts. Hobbes also poses where our ability to know comes from. These two questions should be most in the forefront of your mind: What is Justice to Hobbes?  Where does it come from?
