Chapter 1 in Uppers, Downers and All Arounders outlines the history of the use of substances by various civilizations and then shifts into political actions and laws related and reacting to use of substances.
Create a detailed timeline that covers this history as you read. Be sure to include each time period mentioned all the way through to the “Today and Tomorrow” section, and the major substances used.

You may also use a table in Word or use Excel to list the events, and related substances, in more of a chart format. The important thing is to ensure that you include each time period, any dates/events mentioned and the substances applicable to that period. Include events related to prevention and treatment as well.
Next, consider the historical themes identified in the text based on studying the history of drug use, abuse, taxation and regulation. Then examine any addictions you have encountered (yours or others) and write a two-page reflection regarding the process of addiction (this length is for this reflection only, not including the timeline). Compare and contrast addictions you have seen with the themes identified in the text. Explain how this relates to what we have learned about substance use from the historical themes.
