For this paper, you are going to play the
part of a curator. A ‘curator’ is “a person who organizes the collection and
exhibition of objects / artworks in a museum or gallery” (Gateways, 688). As a curator, you are going to put together an
exhibit for a gallery in the NCMA.
Choose
3 works of art to join your temporary exhibition.
These works can be from the NCMA but do not have to be – as a curator, you have
the prerogative to ask other museums if you can “borrow” their works. But you
will have to let your reader know from where the works you are using are on
loan. You will introduce your reader, briefly, to the works that are in your
show, and then write a paper in which you describe the exhibition you’ve
designed.
You
will answer questions including:
1.
What works are in your exhibition?
What is the theme of the exhibition? How do each of the works you chose fit
with that theme?
2.
What is the goal of the exhibition – what do
you hope your viewers will learn after visiting the show?
3.
Each artwork chosen should have
their own descriptive paragraph where you visually analyze the piece – go over
the elements and principles seen within each piece. Use the skills you have
learned this semester to fully analyze what you are seeing and how you know!
4.
Include any information about how
the gallery will be prepared for the works. Will you have the walls painted?
Will there be any special lighting used to highlight the works? Are the objects
going to be placed on pedestals or hung on the wall? What kind of wall text
will accompany your works? Basically, I want you to write a paper as if you are
a curator who is proposing this show to your donor. You’ll need to sell your
idea!
