Description: Describe and discuss the types of resources and systems in place to aid in the recognition and response to acute physiological deterioration and/or deterioration in mental state in your workplace and/or other parts of the health care system related to your specialty.
Discussions will include:
- A brief description of your workplace (including what services are delivered and the general structure of the service (including support and referral chains) – please use an acute care nsw health hospital (Australia based)
- A description of the systems and processes that are in place in your health service to promote patient safety and/or assist in recognition and response to deterioration in physiological or mental state (at least 3). Please use:

- An analytical review of those systems and processes that are in place (at least 3) to promote patient safety and/ or to assist in recognition and response to deterioration in physiological or mental state in the healthcare system in which you work.
This analysis must include:
- A discussion using evidence-based literature or best practice guidelines to support the use of these systems or processes in the workplace.
- A review of how these systems are monitored, audited, improved.
- A discussion of any barriers to appropriate recognition and response to acute deterioration in your health system (system issues, human factors issues, issues with non-technical skills etc) and a suggestion of how these barriers could be addressed. You must discuss at least one of these barriers and your choice should be supported by evidence-based literature.
When critically evaluating relevant recognition and response systems and processes in your workplace. Include at least:

- How well do they meet the requirements for recognition and response systems?
- What standardised communication tools are used?
- How well are the systems implemented, monitored and reviewed?
- Are they supported by good Governance?
- How are staff and patients supported after an adverse event?
- Do they support person-centred care?
- Use evidence-based literature (EBL) to support your arguments.
When addressing barriers to the recognition and response to deterioration in the workplace

- consider the potential risks to the safety of your patients (systems issues, human factors issues, issues due to non-technical skills etc)?

- Discuss improvements you might suggest to your Quality and Safety Manager to minimise these risks and improve patient safety in your hospital/health care service?
- Use EBL to justify your workplace risks and suggestions for improvement.
