Focus of the essay question (very important):
1. ’conceptual tool’ is a structured set of observations or explanations that we use to make sense of social phenomena. Another way to think of this is to picture conceptual tools as lenses – when we adopt a particular conceptual tool, it affects the way we see and explain social phenomena, and the questions we ask in trying to understand why things are the way they are. So, when scholars make use of the conceptual tool of racialisation, they are motivated to understand processes which reflect and and reconstitute racial categories, and the effects for those people so categorised.
2. The essay question is asking you whether it is useful to adopt racialisation (and the questions it entails) when we try to explain how the police are using the GVM, and to provide some comment on the explanatory power (i.e. the strengths and weaknesses) such an approach entails.
