Part 1:

Students will engage in a thorough analysis of toys sold on the market, developing a sense of gender biases, and converting overt messages embedded in marketing. You will focus on a toy section in any major store. Describe the aisles and provide your opinion on the gender representation of the toy arrangement. Then, choose an aisle and describe the section of your choice. Is this area for boys or girls? Provide a toy description and determine the target gender. Look for a toy offered for both genders or gender-neutral in different colors. What is the cost of each? How many toys in this aisle portray male and female genders in the advertising?

 

Part 2:

Using your choice of platform, create a presentation using slides to incorporate the toys from your aisle into your classroom, focusing on a specific developmental domain: language, cognitive, social-emotional, or physical. Your slides must be labeled as follows:

 

Slide 1: Must include title, name, date, and class information

Slide 2: Sections for boys or girls?

Slide 3: Toy description

Slide 4: Cost difference

Slide 5: Males vs Females

Slide 6: Choose a toy from your aisle and tie it to a developmental domain

Slide 7: Classroom (you will create your classroom)

Slide 8: Create a focus area

Slide 9: How does the toy enhance the developmental domain you chose?

Slide 10: Introduce the toy to your students.

Slide 11: Describe any difficulties you encountered regarding the process of describing, comparing, and determining the gender of the toy, and including it in your focus area.
