Research Questions
- Local Cultural Dynamics: How did U.S. military leadership misinterpret the cultural and political structures of the Central Highlands during 1967–1968?
- Tactical Missteps: What specific counterinsurgency tactics failed in the Central Highlands, and how did these failures reflect a broader misunderstanding of local conditions?
Thesis Statement
The U.S. counterinsurgency efforts in the Central Highlands during 1967–1968 were undermined by a systematic misreading of local cultural and political realities, which precipitated tactical errors that significantly weakened American military effectiveness and contributed to the eventual strategic failure in Vietnam.
Instructions
This assignment is open-ended in that you are free to choose any topic you wish, so long as it pertains in some way to the Vietnam War from 1945 to 1975.
Then notify the instructor via an email message (via the Messages tool in the course site) of your choice by 11:55 p.m., ET, the end of Week 5.
Once a topic has been approved, write a min. 8-10 page paper on it. The paper must be based on 8-10 sources min., at least two being primary sources.
The research paper must abide by the “Standards for Evaluating Written Work” and the statement on primary and secondary sources, both of which may be found in the Resources section of the e-classroom. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in a lowered grade.
The technical guidelines (format, font, spacing, etc.) are the same as in the Short Paper assignment.
► This paper must have a separate title page (with your name, title of paper, name and number of course, and date) and a separate page for works cited.
► This is important — As with the Short Paper assignment, it is recommended that you compose, proofread and save your paper in your hard drive, identifying the document by your last name only and “RP.” This is requested because the document is downloaded for review to the instructor’s computer, and the designator makes it easier to organize. Upload the document using the “Add Attachments” link below.
