Surveys are a cornerstone of your Capstone Project. The purpose of the Stakeholder Survey is to add value to your Capstone Project by reaching a larger group of individuals. Since you will be asking a larger group (the sample) more diverse data may result.

In most cases whatever group you choose to sample will be a non-probability (non-random) sample. In many cases your sample will be a convenience sample. In all of the situations, this is fine for the Capstone Project process. You are expected to do the best you can when it comes to finding a sample. It is expected that the sample be an appropriate group of individuals who have information to offer on the specific Capstone Topic. However, since you are limited by access to contact information and limited by finances, non-probability and convenience sampling are acceptable. With that said, those who use any form of non-probability sampling should be clear about what limitations this has regarding the internal and external validity of the survey results.

Prior to construction of the survey, you should conceptualize what survey information could add value to your Capstone Project. To increase the validity of your survey, it is vital that you ask yourself the following four questions:

  • Who do you plan to send this survey to? (What is your sample?)
  • How is your sample going to help provide you with relevant and useful information (data) for your Capstone Project?
  • How will the information you obtain be helpful to your study?
  • How do you plan to get the information (collect the data, send the survey)?
