Instructions
Journals are a private opportunity for students to reflect on student’s personal and professional lives. It will be read-only by your instructor and kept confidential. The journal is not a report, it is about the student sharing their observations/feelings about a topic. Reflective Journals do not need to be in the APA template. For Reflective Journals, it is okay to use first person, so long as you do not put the assignment in the APA template. Use the article (under readings and resources) by Pertain, Ingram & Strand (2017) for the last two questions in this assignment.
The assignment asks the student to address the following:
- From the textbook readings, select an example of traditional cultural healers and folk remedies. Describe the group and their traditional folk remedies. Then describe how you would or would not integrate their practice within our western medicine philosophy. What could be some problems with this?
- Based on the readings and resources from the Partain, Ingram & Strand (2017) article what questions would you ask a patient to gather an understanding of patient’s model of illness?
- Based on the readings and resources from the Partain, Ingram and Strand article what questions would you ask a patient to understand their religious or spiritual values and to determine their approach to truth-telling?
Use the following headings:
Introduction (all headings should be bolded)
An introduction typically begins with a few general statements (three to five) about the topic, followed by a purpose. Purpose statements go at the end of the introduction paragraph, feel free to use the one provided. The intent of the purpose statement is to let the reader know what will be discussed in the paper or discussion. Remember all paragraphs have at least three to five substantive statements. Please do not list any references in the introduction. A good introduction should stand on its own. In other words, the reader should be able to read the introduction and fully understand what is in the paper. An easy way to think about it is, is to look at all of the items in your headings.
Here is an example of a purpose statement for this assignment: “The purpose of this reflective journal is to review a culture for their healers and folk remedies and how a nurse could integrate their practice in western culture. In addition, a framework for eliciting a patients model of illness will be reviewed along with questions one would ask to determine a patients religious, spiritual values and their approach to truth telling.” Remember, the purpose statement always goes at the end of the introduction. Feel free to use this purpose statement.
Healers, Remedies, Western Problems
Select a cultural group from the readings, then describe the group and their traditional folk remedies. Describe how you would or would not integrate their practice within our western medicine philosophy. What could be some problems with this?
Model of Illness & Truth Telling
From the readings, discuss how you would elicit the patients model of illness. What questions would you ask? Next, what questions would you ask to determine their approach to truth telling? This information should come from the readings and resources in the module.
Conclusion
A good conclusion should stand on its own. In other words, the reader should be able to read the conclusion and have a good idea of what the paper was about. A good rule of thumb is each section should be reviewed with at least two paragraphs.
