What to Do:
-
Read all of these instructions before you begin.
-
Select a current news story about education that you can connect with effective teaching OR with factors that affect student success. Current means no more than 2 years old. Your news story should be a story for the general public.
-
Tell the reader the title of the news story, who wrote it, and where and when it was published.
-
Write a summary of the story. Provide enough detail to make it clear to your reader. Your professor should be able to read the summary and understand what the story was about.
-
Explain to the reader how the news story connects to “effective teaching” OR to “factors that affect student success.”
-
Tell the reader whether the news story aligns with research on effective teaching. Is it supported by evidence?
-
Connect the news story to at least one specific research article about effective teaching or factors that affect student success. Explain how it connects. Be sure to cite the article and provide full information about where to find it.
-
What lesson does the news story have for you in your role as a teacher? Describe at least one important lesson. Connect the lesson to your own teaching and explain how it connects.
-
Conclude by telling the reader your overall impression of the news story. Does it frame the issue in a neutral, positive, or negative light? What view of teaching does it give the general public?
-
Include at least two references. One will be the news story and another will be the research article. Use APA style for your references. Cite each one within your narrative using APA format and list each one on a “References” page.
