Death of a Salesman: Are things always as they seem? What is the common human experience?

Personal response assignments are written in essay form. They will be typed and double-spaced (hand-written assignments will not be accepted) and include the following components:

  1. Title page
  2. In-text citations in MLA format for quotations or references
  3. Works cited page in MLA format
  4. Minimum of 5 separate and detailed paragraphs, at least one for each of the following questions or topics:
  • An introductory paragraph for the selected text/genre/response.
  • How does the piece relate to one or both of the themes studied in this section? (Are things always what they seem? What is the common human experience?) Explain.
  • How does the piece resonate with you or inspire your thinking? Why?
  • Are there any quotations or particular diction that resonate with you? Why? (reference properly)
  • A concluding paragraph to finalize your assignment.

Trust the writer inside you…but before you begin working on your personal responses, examine the rubric to learn about the expectations for these assignments. Happy reading and writing!

Note: A college-level paragraph includes between 5 and 10 sentences, with each sentence containing 8 to 20 words. You must also use proper spelling, punctuation, etc.

Title page – Your title page will include the title and author of the piece you read, centred on the page, along with your name, class, school, and date of submission that will be right aligned in the lower right corner of the page. (Sample)

In-text citations – Quotations or specific references to the text in the essay will be cited using in-text citations in MLA format. For information about how to do in-text citations in MLA format, see the Purdue Owl website.

Works cited page – The literary piece you chose, and any other references quoted, will be listed on a Works Cited page at the end of the essay. For information about how to do a Works Cited, see the Purdue Owl website. (Use the “Cite your source automatically in MLA” resource to generate the listing in the correct format automatically.)

Please see the attached rubric and copy of the text to refer to.
