Developing Critical Thinking Skills through Debating Activities for English Majored Students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology

I want to write the methodology for my research. It is an interview for 5 students.

The research will adopt a qualitative approach to delve deeply into the experiences, perceptions, and nuances surrounding the development of critical thinking skills among English major students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) through speaking activities. Qualitative research is chosen for its ability to capture rich, descriptive data and to explore the complexities of human experiences and behaviors. By employing methods such as interviews, observations, and document analysis, this approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing critical thinking development within the specific context of speaking activities.
This study’s target population is students in the Faculty of Foreign Language, Hanoi University of Science and Technology. However, the survey cannot cover all of them. Therefore, the focus-group interview will mainly focus on 6 student volunteers. The focus-group interview will provide valuable insights into participants’ perceptions of the effectiveness of debating activities, their own experiences about the development of critical thinking in debating skills. After that, suggestions on how to use debating activities to enhance critical thinking will be made.
Overall, the research will be conducted through a systematic process of data collection, analysis, and interpretation, guided by the principles of qualitative inquiry. By exploring the lived experiences and perspectives of participants, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the efficacy of speaking activities in developing critical thinking skills among English major students at HUST.
