Choose a family of plants, animals, fungi, or protists that interests you. Write an essay arguing that diversity in this family (or some fraction of the species in this family – but you must use a coherent taxon within the family) is the result of macroevolution. Cite evidence from the literature of how the family has diversified. For one or more species in this family, argue that microevolution has occurred. Similarly, cite evidence from the literature for microevolution within a species of one or a few closely related species.
We’ve examined five kinds of evidence for macroevolution: the fossil record, biogeography, comparative anatomy, development, and biochemical systematics. Use evidence from one or more of these areas to make your argument.
Whether you make direct, indirect, or a combination of both kinds of arguments, you will be able to make the strongest arguments when you document your work with sources from the primary literature, review articles, and/or textbooks.
