The Novice to Expert theory is a celebrated change model introduced to nursing in 1982 by Patricia Benner and can be used in nursing practice to matriculate graduate nurses into the profession and track their growth into experts in the field. The Novice to Expert model outlines the personal changes a nurse undergoes, starting from being a novice and new to the profession, gaining knowledge and skills through personal experiences and other sources, to finally becoming an expert nurse. The theory stipulates an objective model of acquiring skills through five proficiency stages: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (Thomas & Kellgren, 2017).
For this week’s journal entry, discuss the five stages of Benner’s Novice to Expert theory. Discuss how you transitioned through these stages in your current practice.
