The WTO’s work on promoting sustainable development in trade is carried out by the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE), created by the 1994 Ministerial Decision on Trade and Environment. The Committee on Trade and Environment has brought awareness to the multilateral trading system of the fundamental linkage between trade and environmental measures (WTO-CTE, n.d.). Despite the committee not effecting changes to the trade rules, members and observers of the Committee, through intense discussions and regular calls for action during its regular meetings, several trade and environmental issues, such as eliminating fisheries subsidies to protect the fish stocks and trade rules, environmental agreements, and disputes have found its way on the negotiations table since 2001 at the Doha round and has come up as recent as the 12th Ministerial Conference(MC12) in June 2022.
