I reached out to my town’s Democratic Town Committee with the intention of helping the group to be more apparent and transparent in Greenwich, especially among my peers who either didn’t know the group existed or what role it had in local politics. I’d attended several board of education meetings, so I thought I’d take a further step in my role as a town steward. I emailed them with my proposal to create an Instagram page for them listing the members, candidates for elections, meeting agendas and updates, and general town-wide communications.
At a private meeting, they took a vote and that night I began serving as a student representative. Walking into town hall for our first public meeting, I felt a surge of excitement and anticipation. The room buzzed with a diverse mix of voices, each carrying a story, a concern, a passion. Democracy was alive and tangible, and I was about to become part of its heartbeat. That first meeting was nothing short of an awakening. We delved into election strategies, discussing how to connect with our neighbors and to understand their needs. Each voice mattered, and every opinion was valued. It was here that I realized the true essence of democracy: it wasn’t about power; it was about people.
Our work was very real and palpable. The school district’s budget is always the greatest concern. Teacher salaries are expensive, and the school buildings in Greenwich are old. Some are beginning to crumble, with one of our elementary schools built upon a literal sinkhole.
We often debated late into the evening over funding and budgetary concerns. I learned that numbers on a spreadsheet were more than just figures; they were the resources that could improve our schools, support local businesses, and ensure public safety. Within the conflicting views, there was always a shared commitment to our town’s well-being.
Through my involvement with the Democratic Town Committee, I’ve discovered a profound sense of purpose. It’s taught me that real change starts at the local level, with individuals willing to invest their time and energy into the betterment of their community. This experience has ignited a lifelong passion for civic engagement, showing me that even the smallest voices can have the biggest impact.
