Discussion – Between the Iron Curtain: 1945 – 1990 – Greece and Turkey as Peripheral States in the Cold War
Greece and Turkey as Peripheral States in the Cold War
How did politics and society in Greece and Turkey throughout the Cold War exemplify the type of peripheral international partner to the United States during the Cold War? Obviously both countries were important enough to be incorporated into NATO, and both served, to a degree, as a bulwark against Soviet incursions into the Mediterranean. But beyond that, internal politics remained volatile, society remained restless, and civil society remained fragmented and disjointed from formal institutions. Is this similar to how the United States treated other client countries throughout the world during the Cold War, or is this also an indication of a continued patterns of political dysfunctionality particular to the region?
