Children’s Peer Relationships: The Role of Teachers and Parents in Determining Social Status

Chapter 7 in your textbook and the attached video explore the following social statuses: popular, rejected, controversial, average and neglected. It may seem simple to determine the characteristics of the children in each category but research shows us that there is more to the story.

Instructions:

  1. Watch the attached video and review pages 246-251 in your textbook.

  1. Discuss the following:
  2. In the video, Prof. Banerjee explains the benefits of ‘intervention strategies” on the overall well-being of students (better social interactions, better attainment, better attendance). Imagine everyone in your group are members of a middle school PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization). The school is experiencing an increase in bullying so the principle has asked the PTO for help. He wants parents to be more involved in the fight against bullying and wants the PTO come up with ideas he can share with parents at the next Open House.
  3. Your groups objective is to design and explain (in detail) at least two “intervention strategies” that could be implemented at home by the parents of middle schoolers in order to foster the skills necessary for children to raise their social status.
  4. Include an overview of each strategy, which skill(s) the strategy intends to improve and the potential consequences for rejected children if your strategies aren’t implemented.
  5. Your strategies should be realistic but you are encouraged to “think outside the box” and get creative!

Grading Criteria:
