This paper explores the powerful connection
between context, artist’s intention, and the perception of women in art and their role in the society at the time. It’s a Discussion on the importance of understanding the connection between the context and the artist’s meaning when we look at art.
2 parts:
a) the historical example of the connection between the
artist’s intention/ meaning, style, and context,
b) a discussion on why context and intention are important
for our own time and place.
Bring in 1 or 2 examples
from movements or artists that you personally found really interesting,
controversial, or problematic. ( Madame X (Virginie Gautreau), 1884, Edgar Degas ‘Dance Lesson’ , The Absinthe Drinker)
Discuss what they were trying to show or reveal
or persuade their public of, how the medium and style influences the way the message
is communicated, and why that message is important at that time. Then, discuss why this is important for your own time
and place- for your work, but also for the context of our world in
general.
This is not an opinion piece on whether you personally
believe they did a good job, or the subject was relevant to its time– that is not the
objective. This is to demonstrate that you understand how those components come
together.
I would specifically like to have the reson why Madame X had to be repainted discussed and how does it relate to todays standards. ( the falling arm of a dress was considered indeaceant a the time). I would also like to see how Edgar Degas portraed women in a realistic manner. Perhaps about todays perfectely posed images on social media and pressure on perfection?
