For your discussion post this week, you will need to design and describe a health promotion program, aimed at improving a health problem for a specific population. For examples of what this might look like, see case studies 11-1 through 11-4. Your discussion post doesn’t need to be as long or as detailed as the case studies from the textbook. Just be sure to describe each of the following three elements:
(1) Identify a specific health problem, in a specific population.
This could be something that you have noticed from your own cultural experience (for example, you could use your post from discussion 1 or examples from other student discussion 1 posts), or from examples in class or in the book throughout the semester, as long as you do not use the same examples given in chapter 11.
(2) Discuss a cultural factor relevant to the health problem.
This could be an ethnomedical/ethnopsychiatric practice that plays a role, issues of morality or stigma connected to the health problem, internal cultural factors or external cultural or political-economic factors, etc. See the questions on page 140 for more details).
(3) Propose an idea for a health promotion program or intervention that addresses the cultural component of the health problem. Be sure to describe in detail how the program would be effective in taking the cultural factor into account, and through it, have the potential to improve health for the population.
This could be a health promotion program, an intervention, a community outreach program, information dissemination or a similar initiative. Think about designing the program in a way that will be meaningful and effective in your target population. Be specific and be creative!
