Discussion Poll Question:
The module introduced quantitative methods for establishing correlation among variables but cautioned that correlation does not mean causation. Causation within sociology refers to the existence of “cause and effect” relationships between multiple variables. Do you believe that sociology can establish causality? In other words, do you believe that sociological research methods can be used to definitively identify what causes certain social outcomes? For example, can sociological research methods be used to identify the causes of a president winning an election, the causes of a social movement, the causes of racial disparities in incarceration, or the causes of higher rates of diabetes among low-income populations? Use examples in your argument.
