Based on research from it generally takes longer for a meat-rich meal to get digested compared to a meal higher in vegetables and whole grains. Meat is a dense source of protein and fat, and contains less water and fiber to help aid in faster digestion process. Meat based food sources can slow down the digestive process due to their nutrient density, however on the other hand, vegetables and whole grains are high in fiber, which helps to promote faster digestion. The body digest food in three stages which are oral, gastric, and intestinal which involves the secretion of stomach acid and enzymes produced by glands in the stomach lining. Typically your stomach has an easier time breaking down whole foods and single ingredient foods, especially food sources that haven’t been tampered with through the means of chemicals and preservatives.

Meat rich meals are consumed and are processed in the stomach through the intestines and are broken down by an enzyme called trypsin and converted into amino acids which are then absorbed by the intestines for nutrients. Meat and fish can take up to 2 days to fully digest due to the complex molecules that take longer for your body to pull apart.

Like mentioned before, plant and vegetable based food sources contain nutrients that actually stimulate the movement of food in your digestive tract. Typically vegetables take longer to digest than fruit, and digestion time varies depending on which vegetable or fruit you consume. Vegetables like lettuce, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, and other vegetables containing a lot of water will need just around 30 minutes for digestion to take place. The body’s ability to digest fruit varies by fruit, and can range from 20 to 30 minutes. According to research watermelons are the easiest fruit to digest, taking around 20 minutes to leave the stomach. Fruit alike such as other melons, oranges, grapefruit, bananas, and grapes, take about 30 minutes. Apples, pears, kiwis, and cherries can take a little longer that other fruits but are still digested relatively quick.

However, individual digestion times can vary based on factors such as metabolism, overall health, and specific food combinations. It is recommended to maintain a balanced diet with a variety of foods to support optimal digestion and overall health.
