Instructions
Policy/Initiative Critique – Based on course readings and content, compose a critical analysis of a district or school-wide diversity and/or anti-racism initiative/reform/policy. We’ll breakdown this assessment option and review a few examples in class on Monday.
In the module 4 lecture slides, there are examples of possible diversity and equity school-based initiatives including but not limited to:
- Magnet schools/programs
- Cultural competency programs for teachers and staff
- Charter schools
- AVID program
- Grow Your Own Teacher Pipeline
When selecting an initiative or policy to critique, ask yourself “in what way does this program promote, sustain or increase educational equity, student/teacher diversity; and/or school inclusivity?”
ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING CRITIQUE PROMPTS in your poster/presentation:
-
- An overview of the initiative, policy or reform that was proposed to address the specific educational problem – this module explores DEI. In your overview answer questions such as: what was the issue that required attention? Who proposed/designed the initiative, policy or reform? For whom? Why or how was addressing the issue critical to an equity-excellence in education framework? How was it (the initiative, policy or reform) implemented?
- Analysis of what happened – consider the gap between what was originally intended v. the implemented program/policy. Answer questions such as: What happened? Were there both un/intended consequences? Why does it matter?
- Recommendations– Answer questions such as: What would it take to improve upon the original initiative/policy? Why would this be important?
