During World War II and the post-War era, what specific challenges did marginalized communities face in their vision of freedom? How did these groups rise to the challenge and in what ways did they succeed?

From the fight on the battlefields and on the home front during World War II and the 15 years of the post-war era, inhabitants of the United States fought valiantly for freedom and liberty.  However, during that critical period, various groups had been blocked in the path to prosperity and had to struggle even harder to earn a piece of the American dream.  When you consider the material in Chapter 22 (World War II) and/or Chapter 24 (An Affluent Society, 1953-60), and the Primary source material included under the “Voices of Freedom” headings in the textbook, craft a 5-paragraph essay with an arguable thesis on the above prompt.

Use this format for your paper:

  • 1 3/4 to 3  pages (675-1000 words).
  • 12 font, (Times New Roman, Arial are usually best)
  • Inch-wide margins
  • double-spaced

Make sure to include these elements in your paper:

  • An introductory paragraph with a thesis statement
  • At least 3 body paragraphs, each with a mini-thesis and which contains specific details to make your argument on these specific communities and their challenges.
  • A conclusion
  • A paper title that reflects your thesis (Something like “Blacks and the GI Bill:  Fighting a Battle after the War” Not “Primary Source Analysis Paper #1
  • Evidence that includes at least 2 primary sources and at least 4 primary source quotes.
