3: More medical microbiology specialties (virology, parasitology, mycology,
prions)

59-year-old male is admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. He has a past
medical history of AIDS and has been taking Atripla for his HIV disease. You
recall when you studied microbiology that the HIV virus is always treated with
at least three medications. In a panic, you look up this medication and then
realize it is a combination of three antivirals (efavirenz, tenofovir, and
emtricitabine) all combined into one pill. The hospital pharmacy does not have
this drug because it is costly and they do not have many HIV/AIDS patients
admitted to the hospital. They dispense two of the medications, but they do not
have the third one so it is placed on hold. The patient is discharged after a
5-day hospital stay and resumes his Atripla upon discharge.

will be assessed. The depth and breadth of the response will be considered.

conversation that would take place in a conventional on-campus classroom, you

assessed. Your peer response needs to meet a minimum of 50 words. Do more than
just say “I agree” or a similar response. Instead, explain why you
agree or disagree — or better yet, ask questions, consider alternatives, etc.
