Please see the attached rubric and structure for the assignment below. Please feel free to send me a message for clarification.
Approximately 4-5 pages double spaced
Do not double space
your name, class title, etc.
Format: Standard margins, font, double spaced, page numbers, etc.
Citation: You should not utilize quotes longer than a sentence or two.
However, if you use outside material it needs to be documented. There’s no
requirement for how you cite – just that you do it if applicable.
Step
#1: You are a leader.
You
are now in charge of something. You’re a manager, captain, chief, etc. Your
subordinates look to you for leadership and guidance. You’re about to be hit by
a disaster, emergency, or crisis.
You
are good enough, you are smart enough, and gosh darnit, people like you.
Step
#2: The disaster, emergency, or crisis you are confronting (by major and field)
Criminal
Justice (Policing): Multi-day white supremacist rally with equally violent counter
protestors.
Criminal
Justice (Corrections): Prison riot.
Nursing,
Public Health, and EMA Medical First Responders: Minor pandemic that is taking
a heavy toll on the elderly (somewhere between Covid-19 and the yearly flu).
EMA
(Firefighters): Wildfire. 20,000 acres in a sparsely but still populated area.
EMA
(Everyone else), Public Administration, Political Science, and anyone who
doesn’t fit into a category: Natural disaster (tornado, hurricane, fire,
earthquake, etc.… pick one that fits your geographic location) that poses a
sustained risk to communications, technological, and transportation
infrastructure.
Your
paper corresponds to your major and field. If you don’t fit into a category –
pick from one of the above or utilize the catch-all at the bottom. Since I’m
only providing you a basic description, fill in details as necessary. It isn’t
feasible for me to provide you a 3 page a description of each event (the
assignment outline would be 20 pages!).
You
can fill in details if necessary. However, do not do goofy things. For example,
if you’re responding to a prison riot – the prisoners do not have a nuclear
weapon and invisibility cloaks.
Step
#3: Outline and Purpose
This
paper will apply appropriate theories and strategies relating to leadership and
management to your situation/emergency/disaster. What I want you to do for each
prompt is to identify a leadership or management challenge and then address how
you would approach it as a leader or manager. The topics correspond to the
textbook and I expect that your responses roughly correspond to the textbook.
Prompts
to address:
1. What kind of
stress would your colleagues and subordinates be facing? As leader, how would
you address this? What challenges would you face in addressing stress?
2. As leader, what
kind of strategies and/or approach(es) would you utilize to get colleagues and
subordinates to follow your directions/instructions/orders? What challenges
would you face in doing this?
a.
You can also discuss developing trust here, if
wanted/needed.
3. What type of
ethical dilemmas or issues would you, your colleagues, and subordinates face?
As leader, how would you guarantee that everyone maintains a high level of
integrity and engages in ethical behavior? What challenges would you face in
doing this?
4. As leader, how
would you convince your colleagues and subordinates that the response to this
event is important and meaningful? What challenges would you face in conveying
this message?
5. As leader, how
would you assess the morale of your colleagues and subordinates? What would you
do or implement to improve or maintain positive morale? What challenges would
you anticipate?
6. Are there any
other leadership or management challenges you would face? If so, explain.
