Argument and Essay Structure: About 3-1/2 pages of writing — 750 words to 1,100 words max. 850 words is the ideal length * Introduction and Thesis (about 3/4 of a page — 200 – 250 words) * Body / Evidence Paragraphs (about 2 pages — with about 4 to 6 short quotes and cites, 2 or 3 from each of your 2 stories — 400 – 500 words) *CITE BY AUTHOR’S LAST NAME + PAGE NUMBER (WHEN AVAILABLE). *IF NO AUTHOR (with some encyclopedia articles, e.g.), CITE BY TITLE INSTEAD. *NEVER CITE BY PUBLICATION / WEBSITE. NEVER CITE BY WEB LINK. *Our QUOTE SANDWICH TEMPLATE: The author writes, “[QUOTE]” (Chopin 62). In this quote, [EXPLAIN QUOTE]. * Conclusion — (about 1/2 page — 200 words) *Do you use transitions between and within paragraphs? (You don’t have to be formulaic about this, but remember transition words still have a place in your research papers. First of all, Next, Furthermore, Similarly, In conclusion,) II. Using Evidence: ‘Close Reading’ and Handling Sources *For those students reading short stories, are you reading two short stories in detail? *When writing about fiction, have you avoided plot summary (like a book report) and instead quoted from your sources to develop an argument or main idea? 3 *Have you incorporated several quote sandwiches into your argument where you quote and cite your literary texts or encyclopedia / book review? Have you interpreted or analyzed the ideas/language of your sources to show that you have read and thought about them? Are there any ‘lonely quotes’ where material is quoted/cited but not adequately discussed? III. Avoiding Plagiarism *Are all words in your essay your own? NO AI HELP PLEASE. THIS IS ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND WILL RESULT IN YOU FAILING THE COURSE. (In a research paper, you need to use quotes from other writers. Not all the words in the paper are yours — some are quoted and cited.)* If they are not, are they in quotes? Are they cited correctly? *Are there sentences with paraphrased ideas (facts / opinions from others)? If so, are these cited? BE A ‘PLAGIARISM DETECTIVE’ *As you proofread your sentences, you should ask yourself: ● Does this word, phrase or sentence come from a source? If it does, use quotes and a citation. ● Does this sentence (which is completely in your own words) express an idea or fact from a source (like an encylopedia article or book review)? If it does, use a citation. (PARAPHRASE) *IF YOU DO NOT ATTRIBUTE BOTH THE EXACT WORDS (QUOTES) AND THE IDEAS (PARAPHRASE) FROM YOUR SOURCES, IT IS PLAGIARISM. IV. Works Cited (about 2 pages) FOR THIS FINAL VERSION, ANNOTATIONS CAN BE REMOVED FROM YOUR WORKS CITED PAGE. Even if you don’t cite every work on your Works Cited page, it should be listed. BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT ‘BORROW’ WORDS / IDEAS IN YOUR ESSAY WITHOUT CITATIONS! *Have you double-spaced your Works Cited entries, indenting the second, third (etc.) lines with no extra space between the entries? 4 *Are your citations alphabetized by the 1st word in each citation (excluding a, an, the)? *Is each entry correctly formatted in MLA style? Distribution of Works Cited Sources (3 or 4): 2 MINIMUM FOR PASSING PAPERS! READING 2 STORIES – 4 SOURCES 2 Stories by the Same Author 1 Book Review (Nexis Uni or nytimes.com or wapo.com or guardian.co.uk) 1 Encyclopedia Article (Gale Virtual Reference Library) *The research requirements for the ‘Reading a Magazine Issue’ include 1 short story in the magazine plus 2 or 3 short articles / ads / etc. from the same issue along with the Book Review and Encyclopedia Article.
